Ingredients
- 2 large sweet onions
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
- 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 2 cups panko breadcrumbs
- Vegetable oil for frying
- 1/2 cup mayonnaise
- 2 tablespoons ketchup
- 1 teaspoon vinegar
- 1 teaspoon horseradish (optional)
- 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika
- 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- Peel and slice sweet onions into bite-sized petals.
- In one bowl, mix flour, paprika, garlic powder, cayenne pepper, and salt. In another bowl, pour buttermilk. In a third bowl, place panko breadcrumbs.
- Coat each onion petal by dipping it into the flour mixture, then buttermilk, and finally breadcrumbs.
- Heat vegetable oil in a deep fryer or large pot to 350°F (175°C).
- Fry onion petals in batches for 2–3 minutes until golden brown and crispy; drain on paper towels.
- For the dipping sauce, mix mayonnaise, ketchup, vinegar, horseradish (if using), smoked paprika, garlic powder, salt, and pepper.
