  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 2 cups panko breadcrumbs
  • Vegetable oil for frying
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 2 tablespoons ketchup
  • 1 teaspoon vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon horseradish (optional)
  • 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Peel and slice sweet onions into bite-sized petals.
  2. In one bowl, mix flour, paprika, garlic powder, cayenne pepper, and salt. In another bowl, pour buttermilk. In a third bowl, place panko breadcrumbs.
  3. Coat each onion petal by dipping it into the flour mixture, then buttermilk, and finally breadcrumbs.
  4. Heat vegetable oil in a deep fryer or large pot to 350°F (175°C).
  5. Fry onion petals in batches for 2–3 minutes until golden brown and crispy; drain on paper towels.
  6. For the dipping sauce, mix mayonnaise, ketchup, vinegar, horseradish (if using), smoked paprika, garlic powder, salt, and pepper.
