Ingredients
- 1 ¾ cups all-purpose flour
- ¾ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 2 cups granulated sugar
- 2 large eggs
- 1 cup whole milk
- ½ cup vegetable oil
- 1 cup hot coffee (or hot water)
- 1 cup orange juice (freshly squeezed)
- 8 oz dark chocolate (chopped)
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 1 tbsp orange zest
- ½ cup sugar (for orange filling)
- 2 tbsp cornstarch
- 2 tbsp unsalted butter (for orange filling and ganache)
- Fresh orange slices or candied orange peel (for garnish)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and line three 8-inch round cake pans.
- In a large bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Add eggs, milk, oil, and vanilla extract; mix until smooth. Stir in hot coffee or water until fully incorporated.
- Divide the batter among the prepared pans and bake for 25–30 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. Cool completely in pans before transferring to a wire rack.
- For the orange filling, whisk together sugar, cornstarch, and egg yolks in a saucepan. Slowly whisk in orange juice and cook over medium heat until thickened. Stir in zest and butter; let cool.
- For the ganache topping, heat cream until steaming; pour over chopped chocolate and stir until smooth.
- Assemble the cake by layering with orange filling between each layer and pouring ganache on top.
